Look Out Dunbar Bike Fest, FatBikes Are Coming…

We’re kicking off our launch week with a wee display at Dunbar Bike Fest, this coming Sunday.

Join us at Dunbar Bike Fest

Join us at Dunbar Bike Fest

We’ll be there with the fatbikes for festival-goers to try out, as well as handing out some funky freebies (come see us early in the afternoon as stocks will be limited)! We’ll also be running a couple of hour-long Taster Sessions from Dunbar, at 4pm and 5pm. See our Bookings page for details and to reserve your place.

See you there!

Dolphins and Porpoise Arrive in the Forth

The dolphins can be a spectacular sight, when hunting just offshore.

The dolphins can be a spectacular sight when hunting just offshore.

One of the real signifiers of summer hitting the East Lothian coast is the increase in sightings of the Bottlenose Dolphins and Porpoises which periodically make the Firth of Forth their home. The last couple of weeks have seen just that occurring, with the local Countryside Ranger service reporting the presence of two separate pods (of 4 and 6 dolphins each) off the North Berwick coast.

These dolphins are offshoots from the larger pods which are more commonly sighted further north, in the Moray Firth. From time to time however, some make their way further south in order to seek out other schools of fish to hunt.

Lucky FatBike Tours riders may have the chance to see these beautiful animals as they leap and feed off some of the quieter bays we come across.

More information on the Forth Dolphins can be found on the Scottish Seabird Centre website.

FatBike Tours Official Launch Week

FatBikes are on the prowl

FatBikes are on the prowl

As you may have noticed from the website, currently we are only offering Taster sessions and have yet to launch our full tours. That’s because we decided to start with a ‘soft launch’ period of about a month, in order to properly test the hire fatbikes, our routes and operations. Fear not, that testing period is now almost at an end! Our launch week is now only a couple of weeks away and our full range of tours, including the WW2 Minisub Wreck Ride, Coast and Castles and Isle of Fidra tours will be available to book.

On the 24th of June we will be kicking the week off at Dunbar Bike Fest, where festival goers will be able to try out one of our fleet so that they can experience at least some the unabashed fun that can be had on these portly pushbikes. There isn’t the chance to ride on the sand here however, as the event is taking place at Hallhill park – a wee way from the sea.

Full tours will be running throughout the week from FatBike HQ at Law Cycles in North Berwick – keep an eye on the website for upcoming dates and times.

We will then be finishing the week at the launch day of Foxlake Adventures on the 30th June at Hedderwick Farm, just outside of Dunbar. This is one of the most exciting outdoor sports developments to come to East Lothian in quite some time, incorporating a wakeboarding lake, camping facilites, high ropes and mountain biking – so we are very chuffed to have been asked to bring the bikes along. Again, attendees will be able to have a go on one of the fatbikes.

Throughout the summer you can expect to see us at lots of local events, but these two will signify the real start of FatBike Tours. See you there!

And We’re Off! FatBike Tours Is Go For Launch…

Our flyers have been out and about - watch out for the summer version (shorts and all!)

Our flyers have been out and about - watch out for the summer version (shorts and all!)

As you can see, the covers are off and the cogs of the FatBike Tours website are whirring away nicely. We have had one or two wee setbacks in getting our booking engine up and running, which is why you have had to stare at the very pretty, but ultimately slightly boring holding page up ’til now. These are mere glitches however, and the site will be fully operational WITH online booking and greater tour details in the next few days. In the meantime, keep an eye on our Facebook page for all upcoming Taster Sessions and tours.

In fact, if you live in or around the North Berwick area, you will have seen us out on the FatBikes – leading the first few Taster outings. This is our ‘soft’ launch period, and we’ve been restricting the rides to short sessions in order to test the bikes and the routes. We’ll be offering our full programme of tours very soon however.

To give you a wee introduction to the workings of the site – this is our blog and here you can expect us to be sharing all of our upcoming news, in terms of events we will be attending, partners we will be working with and (wait for it…) details of the inaugural Great North Berwick FatBike Race! Also, we will be sharing pictures and videos from our tours as the summer progresses – as well as some of our favourite fatbiking clips from around the world.

In addition to online booking and our (sometimes) entertaining patter, expect to see a shop being added to the website – we’re already dreaming up FatBike Goodies that you will be able to order, as a reminder of your trip with us or just because they look pretty cool.

All in all, its nice to be finally up and running – we’ve put in a lot of work to get to this stage, there’s a lot more to do, but boy is it going to be fun!
