FatBike Tours – The Concept

  • Have you always fancied doing a guided bike ride but have been put off by the possibility of hills?
  • Has the fact that most guided bike tours take place on roads, and therefore mean riding with traffic put you off?
  • Do you enjoy exploring the great outdoors and learning about local wildlife and history?
  • Are you looking for a unique experience that can be bags of fun, for cyclists of all abilities – whether beginner or expert?

If so, a FatBike Tour is exactly what you need!

We have some of the best beaches in the UK, right on our doorstep!

We have some of the best beaches in the UK, right on our doorstep!

As we are lucky enough to live in one of the most stunning but least known about coastal regions in the UK, the relatively recent arrival of fatbikes to our shores provided us with a lightbulb moment. They give us the opportunity to offer visitors a new, innovative way to experience the coast and access deserted bays, shipwrecks and ancient clifftop castles that would otherwise take hours of trudging. Plus… they’re fantastic fun! Often just the act of floating over the pebbles and sand is enough to put a permanently wide grin on our customers’ faces, never mind the scenery and history!

The ‘fatbikes’ we use as our standard hire bike are Surly Pugsleys. These were actually designed initially to cope with the harsh, snowy winters of the American far north. The supersize tyres and wheels provide huge levels of flotation, which in snowy conditions provides fantastic grip and traction while floating over the top of the snow. This same principle applies to riding on the sand, and we have therefore adapted the bike in order to give us the ultimate coastal riding steed!

The Team

Based in the pretty seaside town of North Berwick (just half an hour along the coast from Edinburgh), the FatBike Tours team began life comprising of Alasdair, Dave and Bruce. Respectively, we are the owners of 2 Wheel Tours (a local bike touring company), Law Cycles (North Berwick’s local bike shop) and the Coastrider Blog (a very popular blog of Bruce’s coastal cycling experiences). Although Bruce is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of FatBike Tours, his influence and knowledge of coastal fatbiking in East Lothian was vital in our development and he remains a good friend. Check out his blog for some awesome video of fatbikes in their natural Scottish habitat (on that sand!).
